Apart from the statutory requirements of having a Presiding officer, 2 members from amongst the employees preferably committed to the cause of women and an External NGO member there are some other aspects which need to be kept in mind when nominating an IC. Foremost among those considerations are:
i) Seniority and maturity of the members on the panel to deal with sensitive SH complaints.
ii) The IC panel should be neutral and impartial.
iii) The members should be approachable and not aloof or overwhelming.
iv) The members of the IC should be well versed with all aspects of the functioning of the organisation
v) The names of the members of the IC should be communicated to all.
vi) There should be regular mandatory awareness sessions on when, how and in what manner the IC can be approached for redressal of a grievance.
The role of the IC is of crucial responsibility because as a statutory panel they are chiefly responsible for the redressal of grievances raised on account of sexual harassment at the workplace and must also prohibit and prevent sexual harassment. Vested with the powers of a civil court, this panel can ensure workplace safety, respectful and harassment free workplaces.
